Climbing frames in Donegal: BERG PlayBase frames, sets and prices
BERG's PlayBase is a climbing frame made of steel, with monkey-bar rungs running across the top and carabiner points for hanging things from. What hangs there is up to you and can change: a baby seat one year, a nest swing and a trapeze later, a pull-up bar when there are teenagers in the house.

What the four share: a depth of 1m, a height of 2.45m, a maximum total load of 400kg, a CE mark and a starting age of 3. Only the width and the number of carabiner points change from frame to frame. Being steel, the frame needs no treating or staining.
Warranty. BERG's manufacturer warranty on the PlayBase frame is 10 years, or 13 years when the frame is registered with BERG.
TL, TT or LL: choosing the ends
A free-standing frame ends in either a tumble bar or a ladder on each side, and the letters say which. TL is one tumble bar and one ladder. TT is a tumble bar at both ends. LL is a ladder at both ends, which suits children who want to climb up and cross the monkey bars. The Medium and Large come in all three, and the price changes with the choice.
How to choose a PlayBase
1. Where will it stand?
Three of the frames, the Medium, Large and Extra Large, are free-standing and go on grass, with base sections anchored in the ground. The fourth, the Wall, is fixed to a load-bearing brick or block wall. A concrete yard beside a solid gable or garage points to the Wall.
2. What width have you?
The frames differ in width and in nothing else: Wall 1.2m, Medium 2.85m, Large 3.8m, Extra Large 4.9m. Depth is 1m and height 2.45m on every one. On top of that comes the free space set out in BERG's manual, which we go through with you.
3. How many children?
Swing-type accessories in use at one time: Wall one or two, Medium two, Large three, Extra Large four. If cousins and neighbours tend to land in, size up.
4. Frame alone, or a set?
Buy the frame by itself from €999 and choose accessories one at a time from €29, or take a ready-made set, a frame with accessories included, from €1,038.
The PlayBase Wall: a frame that needs a wall, and no grass
On a rural Donegal site a free-standing frame can stand on the grass. But the grass is sometimes the wrong place: too boggy, too rocky, too sloped, or out of sight of the kitchen window. And a house in Letterkenny or Buncrana may have a concrete yard and little else. The PlayBase Wall fixes to a solid wall instead of standing on grass.
The Wall frame costs €999 in Black or Green. It measures 1.2m across, 1m deep and 2.45m high, has 3 carabiner points and carries one or two swing-type accessories at a time.
- The wall has to be load-bearing brick or block, such as the house itself, a garage or a solid shed.
- A fence, a timber panel or a hollow partition will not do.
- Most accessories fit it. The ones that do not are the platform and slide, the hammock, the climbing nets and the soccer goals.
- The free space it needs is in BERG's manual. Photograph the wall and the ground in front of it and we will check it with you in the free consultation.
Fixing it to the wall is not something we do. If you have any doubt about what the wall is built of, have a builder look at it before you order.

Nearly everything fits all four frames. Three things to check before you buy: the hammock goes on the Large only, the platform and slide goes on any frame except the Wall, and the climbing net and soccer goal are sized M, L and XL for the Medium, Large and Extra Large.

Ground, wind and anchoring
A free-standing PlayBase is held by base sections anchored in the ground. No concrete is needed. It does need ground to anchor into and enough width: the Extra Large is 4.9m across before any free space is counted.
Donegal ground varies a great deal. The county council's landscape assessment counts Atlantic bog as the largest landscape type, about a quarter of the county, describes the Rosses as low hummocky ground with many small loughs, and notes the glacial till that covers the lower-lying Laggan in the east. We will not guess at how any one garden behaves. BERG's manual covers anchoring the frame, so if your site is exposed or the ground is soft, ask us before you order. PlayBase delivery in Donegal
Every frame and set is over €300, so delivery is free. The PlayBase travels on a pallet with Donegal Groupage of St Johnston, Co. Donegal, a member of The Pallet Network, and is set down at the kerbside. Someone must be there to sign. You bring the boxes in and the pallet is yours to keep.
A frame in stock is delivered within 48 hours. Otherwise allow 7 to 10 days as a rule. We confirm the date when you order. A pallet lorry is bigger than a parcel van, so tell us when ordering about a narrow lane, a low bridge or a long unpaved drive. If a box is damaged, write it on the docket before you sign and tell us within 24 hours.

Assembly, returns and who you are buying from
We supply and deliver. We do not install or assemble. BERG's manual covers assembly, and if you would prefer to hand the job over we can give you the details of an independent installer, who quotes you directly.
You have 14 days to return an order. For a change of mind you pay the return delivery. For faulty, damaged or wrong goods we do. We keep genuine BERG spare parts and price match against authorised Irish BERG dealers on request.

Do you assemble the PlayBase or fix the Wall frame?+
No. We supply and deliver, and BERG's manual covers assembly. If you want the work done for you, we can put you in touch with an independent installer, who looks at the job and quotes you directly.
Is a steel climbing frame a better choice than timber in Donegal?+
It is the lower-maintenance one. The PlayBase frame is steel, powder-coated over a zinc layer, so there is nothing to treat or stain, which counts for something in a county where Malin Head logged rain on 273 days in 2022. It is also a narrow, open frame with no solid panels or roof for the wind to push against.
What ages can use a PlayBase?+
The frames are for ages 3 and up. With the baby seat, a child from 9 months can use it with an adult pushing. The fitness accessories are for ages 14 and over.
